WHAT IS CRYSTAL GLASS?
Crystal glass is a type of glass with a high refractive index and high dispersion that gives extra shine and brightness. There are different qualities of crystal, but the one we are perhaps most used to is lead crystal, where oxides of lead have been added to the glass mass, which makes the glass easier to work with, adds weight and creates the classic “ping” sound. In recent years, the addition of lead has been questioned from a health and environmental perspective. That is why Bobo glasses are made of lead-free crystal. When crafting glasses of lead-free crystal, the lead oxides have been replaced with oxides such as barium, zinc or potassium. This leads to a quality that is harder and retains the brightness. In this way, lead-free crystal is a more durable and sustainable alternative to traditional crystal.
CAN CRYSTAL GLASSES BE WASHED IN THE MACHINE DISHWASHER?
It is common to say that crystal glass should not be washed in the dishwasher. In any case, if the crystal glasses are made without lead in the glass mass, they can be washed in the dishwasher. In fact, in some cases, the dishwasher may even be more gentle on the glass. When washing crystal glass by hand, there is a risk that the glass will be exposed to unnecessary pressure from the dish brush or cloth. All crystal glasses sold on bobo.store are lead-free and we therefore recommend that they be washed in the dishwasher. In addition, it is much more convenient to avoid washing dishes by hand.
With that said, not all dishwashers, water quality and detergents are appropriate. Therefore, we cannot guarantee that your BOBO glasses will not break when washed in the machine dishwasher. Please, be cautious when you handle your BOBO glasses and make sure when loading your dishwasher that the glasses are not sitting too tight between other items. It is better to place your glasses 180 degrees upside down rather than lying down. When washing stemware, if available, use a glass rack in the dishwasher as it provides support to the glassware and stops your glasses from moving around.

CAN YOU DRINK WARM BEVERAGES FROM CRYSTAL GLASSES?
Crystal glass withstands heat in most cases. In order for a drinking glass to crack from high heat, it is required that there is a rapid temperature change, for example if you take a glass out of the freezer and then pour boiling water into it, then there is a risk that the glass will crack. However, there is a greater risk for thick regular glasses than thin lead-free crystal glasses because the thick glass keeps the cold longer. Thus, one could say that thin lead-free crystal glasses withstand heat better than thick ordinary drinking glasses. All crystal glasses sold on bobo.store can withstand high temperatures, provided that the temperature change does not occur too quickly.
CAN YOU DRINK COLD BEVERAGES FROM CRYSTAL GLASSES?
Like heat, crystal glass can withstand cold in most cases. In order for a drinking glass to crack due to cold, it is required that there is a rapid temperature change, for example if you were to take a glass directly from a steaming hot dishwasher and then pour ice water into it. However, there is a greater risk for thick regular drinking glasses than for thin lead-free crystal glasses that this would happen since thick drinking glasses keep the contrast temperature longer.
WHAT DOES HANDMADE CRYSTAL GLASS MEAN?
To BOBO, handmade means that the glasses are individually mouth-blown one by one in a custom designed form, and then finished by hand by master glass artisans. BOBO's crystal glasses have an ultra fine rim and light-weight bottom thanks to the fact that they are crafted in lead-free crystal, which is an extra durable glass mass.
WHAT DOES LEAD-FREE GLASS MEAN?
For lead-free crystal drinking glasses, the lead oxides have been replaced with other oxides for a safer product, this also leads to a quality that is harder and at the same time retains the lightness. In this way, lead-free crystal becomes a more durable and sustainable alternative to traditional crystal. Bobo crystal glass contains, among other things, cerium oxide and silica.
SHOULD I USE RINSE-AID WHEN WASHING MY GLASSES?
Rinse aid, or “spolglans” as it is called in Swedish, is a surfectant. If your glasses do not shine as you hoped for after washing them, it is usually not because it has not been washed properly. It may instead be due to food leftovers that have remained in circulation in the dishwasher or stuck behind plates, glasses and cutlery. During the rinsing period, the rinse aid is added and when it is activated, a protective film is created between your glasses and leftover food in the machine. It is not a must, however we recommend using rinse aid if you feel that your Bobo glasses have lost their shine. If you want a more sustainable alternative to rinse aid, which oftentimes contains environmental toxins. Vinegar, “ättika” in Swedish, works as well. Pour vinegar (12%) into the rinse aid dispenser. Use the same amount of vinegar that you usually take to rinse if you wash with powder and salt.
WHAT IS USUHARI GLASSWARE?
In Japanese, “Usu” means thin and “Hari” means glass. In 1920s Japan, glass masters began mouth-blowing lightbulbs and later applied their techniques to create fine rim glasses. These were exceptionally thin at 0.9mm. The remarkably fine rim allows you to delicately enjoy the taste of the beverage, with minimal interference. BOBO glassware is inspired by this technique and aims to bring this experience to every-day glassware. With an ultra fine rim of 0.4-0.8mm BOBO makes all beverages a true enjoyment, even if it is tap water or expensive wine.
WHY DOES MY BOBO GLASS HAVE AN UNEVEN RIM, SHAPE OR BUBBLE IN THE WALL?
Since all our products are meticulously mouth-blown by master glass artisans one piece at a time there may be a slight variation in rim thickness, shape and presence of bubbles from one item to the next. Such variations are inherent in the manufacturing of mouth-blown glass, so you may expect minor distinctions that will make your purchase special and truly one of a kind. If you are unhappy with your item you are welcome to return it within 14 days of receiving it and order a new piece. Please note that change of heart returners are responsible for return shipping costs.
